Gorilla Run 2012 – Superlift ORV

Posted by: Matt | Comments (0)
Friday, February 24th, 2012

I have been wanting to make the trip out to Superlift ORV in Hot Springs, Arkansas for a long time. When they called me to come down for the Gorilla Run I was all about it. We got back from California on Sunday and left for Arkansas on Thursday. We got in around 9pm on Thursday night. We got a cabin right down the road from the park which was incredible. Mark Simpson (the owner of Jenny Craig Buggy) loaned us a RZR S to get around in all weekend. Tim Cameron and the Tanners had already arrived and had their rigs ready to go.

We left out Friday morning to go do a tour of the park. Mark Simpson led the convoy of nasty built RockRods around the park. The first trail everyone did was called “the ravine”. It was a good warm up trail and most of the guys just throttled right up it. We left there and went straight to a tough trail called “Slammer” It was a nice Rock wall that dropped off at an angle. Most of the rigs got to lean into their motors as they launched up the nasty ledge. Once everyone was up it was time to hit a “real” obstacle. Outlaw was next on our list. It consisted of two hug ledges spaced about 65 yards apart. This is where the carnage began. Adam Lee smoked his low range gearset in his atlas transfer case. This didn’t slow him down too much. He threw it in high and romped on the gas out to the top bypassing the last ledge. Old Man Phillips did a sick wheelstand in his Jeep Buggy much to the crowds delight. Tim Cameron of course picked the hardest line and wheelied up the final ledge with ease. Bobby Tanner never let out from the bottom of the hill to the top and almost took me out in the process. There is no safe distance from Bobby Tanner when he is behind the wheel! Next Josh Bishop grenaded a CTM Shaft in his rig. The rest of the group made the climb and headed back to camp for lunch and spare parts.

After lunch everyone was rounded up to go hit one last obstacle for the day. Ingred’s Revenge was out last and final obstacle. It was alot like boat ramp but steeper with huge boulders at the top. The crowd went crazy as rigs were bouncing off of rev limiters left and right. Tim Cameron hit the gas and never let out as did Bobby Tanner. When you drive like that it takes you on some interesting lines. Charlie Fox was beating his Riddler Buggy liked it owed him money. He was bouncing all over the place with the skinny pedal firmly held to the floor. JoJo Tanner put on a show in Screaming 2 with the wife riding shotgun. She decided to get out after they violently bounced up the slick rock face. The highlight of this trails was a guy in a Toyota Buggy that thought he was a rock bouncer too. He bounced his way up the trail like he had a V8! What a great show! A Perfect day for trail riding. Everyone made their way back to camp for dinner.

We awoke Saturday monring to the sounds of healthy v8 engines running on race gas. The Gorilla run was on! We made our way over to the course. It was huge! It had to have been 150 yards long. You couldn’t see the top from the bottom or visa versa. The competitors drew their starting order as the hillsides filled with huge crowds of spectators. The course was designed with rockcrawlers in mind. It showed when the first few rock bouncers hit the bottom of the course. They were hard on the throttle, flipping over, breaking transfer cases. It was insane! Tim Cameron made it up the entire course but too many backups on the final ledge cost him time. Tim Bacon finished the course with three flat tires begging for mercy! Bobby Tanner flipped over twice at the bottom section of the course but eventually finished for the crowd. When all was said and done Mark Simpson took home the cash with the fastest time in Timmie’s old Jenny Craig Buggy.

Once the rock comp was over with every headed over to the bounty hill. The hill was almost completely vertical in spots. It had been cut by the folks atBounty Hill the park just for this event and no one was allowed on it until it was showtime. The few fearless drivers drew numbers for position. A smile ran across Tim Cameron’s face as he drew the first running position with Wes Kean right behind him. The crowd went nuts as companies and spectators added to the money pot. CSC Fab even through in a custom built Chassis to the guy who climbed the rediculous hill. The pot ended up somewhere around Nine Thousand Dollars in cash and prizes. One kid even donated $21.00 of his allowance towards the winner. It was pure mayhem as Tim Cameron lined up his Hill Killing buggy at the base of the hill. After a few test runs to get his line he nailed the throttle and launched high in the air above the near vertical rock face of the climb. He landed and backed down to give it another go. This time he hammered down and let out just at the right moment to get less air and as soon as he landed he was back in the gas working the rear steer back and forth top propel him to the top. The crowd went absolutely nuts! Tim Cameron had conquered the superlift bounty hill on his second attempt! Many more buggies tried the nasty hill. Ethan Tanner had the hill beat when his motor acted up. It died at the top and without brakes he flew back off the hill only to hit a tree and completely rip the front axle out from under his buggy. Bobby Tanner gave it a few good attempts as did Jordan. A toyota buggy even gave it his all. The action went on into the dark hours of night as every went back to camp to enjoy dinner and a live band. What a Great Event. Be sure to check out all of the videos below!

King of the Hammers Road Trip 2012 part 1

Posted by: Matt | Comments (0)
Friday, February 24th, 2012

There is something different about the King of the Hammers. Maybe it is the tens of thousands of fellow wheelers that help turn this empty lakebed into a city for one week a year. Or the fact that you won’t find a stranger in Hammertown. Like many people I spent the first few years drooling over the live race feed via the internet. I finally decided in 2010 that Busted Knuckle Films had to make an appearance at KOH. We purchased our plane tickets, booth, permits, yadda yadda. It was a great time spent with thousands of fellow wheelers and vendors. It only took one trip out to Johnson Valley before we decided that as long as they were racing Busted Knuckle would be there to cover the action!

For 2011 we decided we would make the 4000 mile round trip from Alabama to California. I decided that the 1/2 ton chevy wasn’t going to cut it. So a few weeks before we left I purchased a 02 Superduty with the 7.3 deisel and over 200k on the clock. Me and Jamin loaded everything up The Tuesday Night before Race week. Two Racing quads, a dirt bike, and a ton of offroad swag filled our enclosed trailer aka “The Swag Wagon”. We left out early Wednesday morning and embarked on our epic road trip. Me and my co driver swapped driving duties every tank of fuel. Which with the 7.3 Diesel averaging 70mph was about 300 miles. We quickly made our way through each state. Mississippi, Tennessee. Once we crossed into Arkansas the GPS might as well of said “Continue on I-40 FOREVER!” LOL. We made it to Okalahoma around dark. Once the Coffee and Energy drinks started to wear off, the descision was made to stop for a quick siesta. A rest stop in Texas seemed like a great spot at 3am. After 2hrs of sleep the sun started rising and we continued on our journey across Texas. We passed through New Mexico and on to Arizona. We arrived in flagstaff, Arizona around 2pm. We booked a hotel room and slept for a few hours before heading to the local pub for some dinner and a brew to end the day.

We jumped back on the road around 4am the folowing morning with 4″ of fresh snow on the BK tow rig and trailer. We were dead set on making it to Hammertown before Dark. The truck and trailer quickly made it through the rest of Arizona. The Cracker Barrel in Albuquerque, NM was our first stop and just in time for them to open. After a belt stretching country boy breakfest we were off to the desert. We crossed into California and went through the check point. A quick look in our trailer to make sure we were smuggling DVDs and Swag & not narcotics and illegals and we were on the home stretch. We arrived in Hammertown around 3pm on Friday afternoon. We wasted no time unloading the toys and heading out for some riding. We had finally made it to the otherside of the Country and our home for the week! We crossed 9 states and drove over 2000 miles to get here and for this one week a year, there is no place I would rather be.

Stay Tuned for Part 2 of our epic adventure!

Fall for All 2011 – We send Gray Rock out with a Bang!

Posted by: Matt | Comments (0)
Friday, October 28th, 2011

We hate to hear it but Fall for All is last big event at Gray Rock ORV for at least a year. The event is usually the biggest of the year bringing in rigs and drivers from all over the south. Fall for All 2011 was one for the books. Drivers were going all out knowing they might not get a chance to wheel Gray Rock again. Big name obstacles like Cable Hill and Tub Rock for many make this park the wheeling mecca of the South.

The day started off as it always does with tons of the baddest buggies in the South rolling in. Everyone got unloaded and we headed out to the first trail, Tub Rock. It was dry and even the Rail Buggies were making it up it. This didn’t keep the buggies from putting on a show. Bobby Tanner stabbed the throttle in his Coleworx built Screaming Blue buggy and never let out until he was out of sight. Ritchie Keith wheelied up it in the John Deere Buggy and Garry Smith aka Super Garry went up it in reverse. The obstacle was a great warm up for the drivers and the rigs. Once everyone had their fill we headed over to Big Egg.

Big Egg gets its name from a huge egg shaped rock at the bottom of the trail. Once you get past it the trail splits off 3 ways. The middle line being the hardline. Chris Smith started off the show with his new Burple buggy. He was hard on the gas, got a little crazy, and ended up on his lid over on the left trail. This Obstacle was tough wet or dry. A few other rigs broke on their attempts. Bobby Tanner walked right up it without hardly hitting the gas. After a booing crowd he went back to the bottom and put on a show with a full throttle attempt. Jordan Tanner throttled up the middle ledge with his Screaming 2 buggy. Tim Cameron and Trenton Park were the last 2 buggies to conquer the climb before we all headed over to Bunny Slope 3.

Don’t let the name fool you. Bunny Slope 3 is one of the most difficult trails Gray Rock ORV has to offer. It has one huge undercut ledge half way up that is bigger than most of these buggies. The trick is to climb the right side of the trail and get your front tires on top of this ledge. Then back up and give it all you got. 14 year old Hadden put on a show as he stood his buggy up on 2 wheels. Man to be 14 this kid can drive with the best of them. He kept his composure backed off the ledge and flopped it on its side. The crowd uprighted his buggy and as soon as the buggy cranked he had the throttle matted and when the dust cleared he was sitting at the top of the trail. Tim Cameron one shotted the obstacle on his first full throttle attempt breaking his second RCV Axle Shaft of the day. Travis Lovett broke in his new Sosebee built Hitman Buggy on its lid after some serious throttle jockeying. He shouted out ” I didn’t build it to look at”. Jordan Tanner shatter an RCV on his attempt at the nasty undercut ledge. Adam Woodlee did a wheel stand roll over and landed right back on his tires facing down hill so he kept on driving as the crowd cheered. Next stop was the infamous Cable Hill.

Cable Hill is the most well known obstacle in the South. Many rock bouncers measure their new buggy builds by whether or not it can make it up Cable Hill in one shot. Lack of Rain had left the once insanely slick Cable Hill dry as a bone. John G took his 38 special show rig up it like it was nothing. The extra traction didn’t keep the Rock Bouncers from putting on a show. Tim Cameron started it by riding the top of the 8 foot gully in his Showtime Buggy only to snap the driver side front wheel and tire off at the knuckle. This was the most insane carnage I had ever witnessed. Tyler Rogers pinned it to win it and wound up climbing a tree in his Yellow Buggy. The Grand Finale to the event was something I never expected. Peter Basler hit the gas in his LS3 powered BTF buggy at the bottom and never let off. He came flying up Cable Hill and hit the final ledge with enough speed to back flip his buggy onto its lid! With the trail blocked and the Trackhoe needed for recovery every one loaded up their rigs and got ready to drive home with a parts list in their head of what needed repaired or what parts they needed to upgrade before the next ride.

Gray Rock ORV is one of my favorite parks. I hate to see it go, even if it is only for a year. It is being shut down so they can mine part of the park for coal. I have been told that all of the major obstacle will stay, but only time will tell. At least we sent it out with a bang.

Peter Basler’s insane Cable Hill Back Flip!

Tim Cameron’s insane Showtime Carnage on Cable!

2011 SFWDA Dixie Run

Posted by: Matt | Comments (0)
Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

We have been itching at the chance to make it out to one of the biggest off road events in Tennessee. Dixie Run is ran by the Southern Four Wheel Drive Association and has been held annually for over 25 years! We pulled in to Golden Mountain Park on Thursday afternoon. It is nestled in the Sparta, Tennessee hills. We were amazed at how well built this park is. It looks like it used to be a big amusement park. We drove up the gravel drive past the dirt circle track and up the hill to the main pavilion between the ponds to setup the Busted Knuckle Booth. We got everything unhooked and headed for a near bye hotel about 20minutes away.
We returned bright and early on Friday to walk around and meet the early risers wandering through vendor row. We caught up with Adam Woodlee of Wide Open Design and Nazir Adam who owns the infamous Blower Buggy. They were getting ready to head out for a trail ride. Nazir asked me how I was getting around. I pointed at my 400EX and laughed. He chuckled and yelled “nope your riding with me”. Without hesitation I hopped in the 830hp supercharged monster and we were off. The buggy has PCI Race Radios so you can talk and not be deafened by the throaty exhaust. We did some mild trails and I got out from time to time to catch some of the action. The new 42″ BFG Krawler stickies wrapped around 20″ beadlocks stuck to everything. He made the new “crackhead” obstacle look like it was nothing. The sun started to go down and the weather started to get cold. The cold weather was no match for the heated seats in the blower buggy. We got back to camp and I climbed out and headed back to the hotel.
Saturday morning is the main day at Dixie Run. There was a competition for all rigs. It was on a course right off the main drag. Competitors had to start the course facing down hill and back up and spin around before they could begin. They then went up a ledge at the bottom and had to make a loop at the top choosing to either go up a nasty climb for a bonus or go up the easy line and come down the nasty ledge. A Toyota Truck on 38″ tires started the show by showing all the big dogs that he could one shot the nasty ledge at the top of the hill. All of the competitors made the nasty ledge at the top. Some took more attempts than others but the action was great! The Rancho buggy had all kinds of bad luck after Running out of gas trying to get to the start line (they will never let him live that one down). He broke a driveline on the crazy ledge at the top after a few throttle happy attempts and had to be winched. Adam Lee put on a show in his new 4 wheel steer buggy and had the fastest time of the day.
Once the comp was over everyone headed to the top of the hill for some much needed lunch. They had some amazing BBQ courtesy of Blue Flame BBQ. Once our bellies were full it was time to get out on the trail and do some exploring. We made our way over to the infamous Bounty Hill. This obstacle is one of the toughest I have ever seen. Only a hand full of people have ever made it up successfully. The rollover rate is very high on this one. We pulled up as a crowd was descending on this adrenaline junky of an obstacle. Jake Burkey was the first to attempt. This is no place for a Jeep even one as heavily built as Jake’s. Everyone was surprised (even Jake) when he pulled up on the obstacle and decided to hammer down and see what happens. The epicness that ensued cannot be described in words but I will do my best. It is best to watch the video below. He launched the buggy half way up the climb only to lunge over to the left and start rolling. People scattered off of the large rock wall (usually a fairly safe place) as Jake and his co pilot tumbled down the hill only to land back on all fours. The crowd went crazy! Jake feeding off of the adrenaline strapped on a helmet and went for round two. His second attempt ended with the Jeep on its side. He was recovered and back down the hill for Adam Woodlee to give it a try in his KOH buggy. Adam is a Bounty Hill Veteran and has climbed it multiple times. After getting lined up just right he launched his LS powered buggy hard up the near vertical rock face. SNAP! Something let loose in the rear 14bolt axle. He was done for the day. PJ Mallory was up next in his FJ40 skinned buggy. He had already climbed the obstacle the day before and was ready to show off this time in front of a crowd. He wasn’t so lucky this time. After lining up with his rear steer he launched his buggy hard with his Maxxis tires scratching for a grip. He slides sideways and rolls over onto his side. Nazir Adam (the owner of the Blower Buggy) has been watching everything unfold from the drivers seat of his 830hp Rockwell endowed Blower Buggy. He sikes his self up and gets ready for battle. The Buggy is stripped of its skins and readied for battle. Nazir and his co driver throw on some helmets and pull up to feel out the rock wall that is Bounty Hill. He gives a few good launches and warms up the 42″ sticky Krawlers. Adam Woodlee guides him into position. In one fluid motion Nazir grips the wheel and stabs the throttle the krawlers are no match for the heart pounding horsepower. They lose grip at the top and throw the rig sideways into a roll. When the dust clears Nazir and his Co Driver are high fiving. They line up to give it another try. This time Nazir stabs the throttle and loses traction at the top of the rock face which this time throws them right into a roll. They once again land on all fours. Thats it. Four rigs came to try and tame the beast that is Bounty Hill and they all leave with an adrenaline infused memory and a few new scratches and dents. What a great end to and epic day. We all headed back to the pavilion where food was served, prizes raffled, and awards were given.
We had no idea what to expect coming to Dixie Run. What we got was a great laid back weekend with a ton of awesome people and some of the best action we have shot all year courtesy of Bounty Hill. You can bet we will be back again next Year for Dixie Run 2012. See y’all then! Until then Check out the Videos Below and the Photo Album on our Facebook Page! KEEPING CHECKING BACK AS WE HAVE A TON OF VIDEOS TO ADD!

Tim Cameron ‘s NEW Showtime Buggy

Posted by: Matt | Comments (3)
Monday, August 15th, 2011

Timmie Cameron goes through buggies the way drag racers go through tires. He will build one and drive it for a while. If he doesn’t like the way the rig feels it will be for sale in a blink of an eye in favor of a new build. Timmie built the Hell Raiser buggy to be fitted with Rockwells. He hated the weight of the beefy axles. So he ripped out the drivetrain and sold the buggy after only one ride. He missed the light weight response of his Green Goblin buggy and decided to build another light weight rig with plenty of ponies under the engine cage.

Burnt out after building his own chassis for the Hell Raiser buggy, Tim decided to let Jimmy at Smith Motorsports build the chassis for his new project. Timmie took the chassis and built the suspension with double triangulated 4 links and coilovers at both ends. The drivetrain from Hell Raiser was crammed in between the frame rails of the new ride. A fire breathing LSX454 started off the list. This 7.4 liter crate engine from GM Performance is rated at 620 horsepower with 11:1 compression. The dirt pounding power of this engine is handled by a power-glide transmission with a 2,000 rpm stall. An Atlas t-case transfers the power to the front and rear 14 bolt steering axles. Single ended rams turn the massive TSL SX tires at each axle. Hummer H1 beadlocks keep the tires stuck on the rims while Timmie beats his way up obstacles and RCV axle shafts take the pounding and try their best to keep the tires smoking. Believe it or not this rig does not have kirkey seats in it! Seems like Tim is tired of being sore after a long weekend of rock bouncing. So he decided to fit some nice suspension seats and 4 point harnesses into his new creation. His new creation was powder-coated fire engine red and dubbed SHOWTIME! We were lucky enough to catch the rig in action at Choccolocco ORV in Jacksonville, AL during the Bama Buggy Bash event. Tim walked up Violater like it was nothing. He did however burn up the trans on WFO. He said he will get the powerglide built to handle the abuse and be back to kill some hills in no time. Timmie says he loves the new rig, so don’t expect to see a for sale thread any time soon. Keep checking back as we will be adding videos to this page. If you are a big Tim Cameron fan be sure to check out our DVD entitled “RockRods” which features a few of Timmie’s full throttle beatdowns. There will also be plenty of the new Showtime Buggy in RockRods 2 which will be available in November! Until next time, Keep that throttle matted and those tires smoking!
