Barbie Jeep Racing is one of the most dangerous off-road sports per dollar you can possibly get into. It is also the most FUN. How else can you get this much fun out of 15lbs of plastic! The concept is simple. Take a power-wheels vehicle, break off the drive gear, go to a steep hill, climb aboard and watch the madness unfold. Barbie Jeep Racing is one of our favorite off-road past times. These things can be had for FREE on the side of the road. Believe it or not, People actually throw them out not realizing their full potential. The 2010 RBD event that took place at Morris Mountain ORV in Heflin, Alabama is where we got our first taste of Barbie Jeep Racing. We took home 1st place and are now hooked! Be watching for us to have more downhill barbie jeep races at the off-road events we film in 2011. For now here is how things went down.
Round 1.
Eight Racers dragged their trusty steeds to the top of the Los Primos trail bypass and prepared for battle. First off was the huge Hurricane against Lee Wolfe. After a few crashes the Hurricane made its way across the line first. Next up was Ricky B. in the Pirate 4×4 dune buggy vs. the Red Rocket. They crashed right out of the gate. The collision ended Ricky’s day and sent Red Rocket on to the next round. Next up was Yours Truly in the smallest Jeep of the race against the purple Jeep. I got off to
a slow start but smoked by my competitor as he tumbled down the left side of the course. Last race of Round 1 was Will Carrell vs. the Shuntwerks Jeep. Will had a hellacious wreck at the bottom of the course but still managed to cross the finish line with only 3 wheels left on the jeep. The Shuntwerks Jeep took two hard crashes before it finally made it across the finish.
Round 2
After Round 1 we had 4 racers still in the running. The first race was the Hurricane vs. Red Rocket. The huge Hurricane launched the got off to a blazing start thanks to its size and heavy rider. This extra weight
backfired on the rider as he missed the turn and was catapulted into the woods just above the finish line. The Red Rocket recovered from an early rollover at the top of the course and decided that laying on the jeep was a better approach. His fast thinking let the red rocket just barely beat the hurricane by inches. The second race was Matt Myrick (Me) vs. Will Carrell who had borrowed a rig since his was laying at the bottom of the track in pieces. I got off to a rocky start as I rode the left embankment of the course. To my surprise I rode it out on 3 wheels and took the lead. I was able to pilot my plastic machine down the course unharmed as Will wrecked behind me on his rental rig.
Finals – Round 3
This was it the FINAL ROUND was here. The two smallest little red Jeeps of the bunch were the two left standing. Myself and the Red Rocket Jeep sat at
the top of the hill with our hearts pumping and thoughts of greatness running through our ringing heads. John G. counted us down to the start of the race. With every number my heart pounded harder. Three, two, one, GO! For a moment all you could hear was the screams of the bystanders and the rolling of the plastic wheels as we battled it out to the last second. I managed to make the dreaded left hand turn at the half way point of the track as my competitor lost control and tumbled his way to a stop. I ran through the yellow caution tape that guarded the finish line at breakneck speeds. There I was, a Rookie to this great unknown sport. A sport where an average Joe can show up on any given Sunday with a kids toy and a set of ca-hones, Only to leave with a couple bruises and a memory that he will remember for a life time. Bruises are temporary, First Place is forever.
I accepted my prizes which came out to $12, some RBD stickers, a Burger King Gift Card, and a 15% coupon to Blue Torch Fabworks. It doesn’t seem
like much but If I had it to do all over again I would have raced for a penny. This was a great way to end a great weekend of wheeling & celebrating Ricky’s 21st birthday. We dusted ourselves off and We loaded what was left of our fisher price chariots into the bed of the truck and made our way back to camp. If you want to take on this epic challenge, then we will see you next year at Morris Mountain ORV for RBD 2011. Until then enjoy some of the footage. Busted Knuckle Films will be on hand filming the official DVD for the King of the Hammers Qualifier taking place in the Black Mountains of Kentucky. The Race will happen Saturday August the 14th. The top 3 finishers will earn a starting position in the Griffin King Of the Hammers race, set for February 2011 in Johnson Valley, California. The DVD will be just $19.99 and can be ordered from our online store. It will be shot in full (HD) High Definition and should be close to an hour in length.
This race is unlike any other. The rigs are unlike any others. Not only are these vehicles built to crawl some of the nastiest obstacles the East has to offer; they are also built to go 80 miles per hour through the desert. This is off road endurance racing at its best. The competitors will have to navigate their way through over 40 miles of the most grueling terrain around. This race will definitely prepare the top 3 qualifiers for the World Series of Off-Road Racing known as King of the Hammers in 2011. The dream of racing in this big of a race draws competitors from all over the country. One racer from Florida has already been to multiple KOH qualifiers and has stated that he will be at the last chance qualifier on the lake bed in California if he doesn’t qualify before that. That is determination right there. That speaks volumes about our ever growing sport and the people that love it.
“I don’t know if the west coasters will give this place its due, but I believe this is going to be the hardest race of the season. I’d put it up on par with KOH if they were going to do the same distances. The rock crawling sections aren’t nearly as long, but the obstacles themselves are equal in difficulty.”
The location of the qualifier is just outside of Harlan, Kentucky at The Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area. Since opening in 2005, Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area has became a top off-road destination in the United States. Over 200 miles of trails on more than 7,000 acres accommodates ATV, 4×4 and dirtbike enthusiasts alike. Trails are rated by difficulty and signed for easy navigation.
The Rock Rallye event at Morris Mountain ORV is definitely one of those events that you won’t want to miss. The 2nd annual race is scheduled for Saturday August 7th starting at 9 am. The classes include small tire, large tire, side by sides & unlimited. There is even a junk car demolition derby circle track race.

The Rock Rallye Race is grass roots racing at it’s best. The race consists of a four lap course that snakes its way all throughout the trails of Morris Mountain Off Road Park. The folks at the park even set up some motocross style jumps in order to turn up the excitement. The rigs are broken up into small tire basic (37″ and below), big tire basic (38″ and up) and the Unlimited class for the full on tube buggy racers. There will even be a Side by Side UTV class. See rig requirements at the bottom of the page. We are sponsoring crazy Steve’s big orange Ford Truggy in the big tire basic class.
So what is the Bomber Class Race? Basically it is as low buck as it gets. All you have to do is find a junk vehicle, knock out the glass, cage it and hope that it survives the grueling 4 hour endurance race. Busted Knuckle Films is sponsoring a bomber class car built by Integrity Automotive in Auburn, Alabama. It will be the one screaming by with our logo on the hood….hopefully still in one piece. Look for us to be filming the entire event for our up and coming DVD entitled “RockRods” scheduled to go on sale in November.
RIG REQUIREMENTS/ SAFETY
-please read the park requirements page on the MMORV website
http://morrismountainorv.com/parkinfo.html#Vehicle%20Requirements
-roll cage, minimum 4 points… main hoop w/ a horizontal bar at shoulder height, 2 diagonal bars connecting the main hoop to the rear frame, two diagonal shoulder bars connecting the horizontal shoulder bar to the frame in the floor board area of the vehicle… basically, build a safe cage, if a tech thinks it is questionable, then you will not race… this is for your own good, we want this to be safe, if you have questions, take a pic and ask…
-seatbelts, 4 point minimum
-fire extinguisher
-grab handles for passengers
-DOT helmet, no bicycle/skateboard helmets
-functioning winch w/ tree saver or synthetic rope
-securely mounted fuel tank…
-recovery points front and rear, a strap would also be suggested
-horn, no air horns, they run out and are inoperatable after a few blasts, this is to notify another racer that you want to pass
-number plates… this will need to be at least 12″ tall and 16″ wide and preferable removable, like w/ zip ties, this will allow us to paint a number onto your plate and you can reinstall it, if you preregister, then you can do this yourself, but the numbers will need to be dark color applied to a light colored background and and stand at least 10″ tall… these will need to be visible from both sides of the rig… we will spray paint your number on your rig if you do not have a plate…
BOMBER CLASS
In addition to the above rules the following are REQUIRED… this class was developed to replace the stock class and most of all to be fun… you should be able to take ANY vehicle and outfit it w/ safety equipment and race… multiple drivers, pits, and repairs are all allowed in the pit area…
-all glass must be removed, this includes headlights, and tail lights… rear facing mirrors are ok…
-window nets for all occupants…
-roll cage over all occupants…
-full sheetmetal… bumpers are ok to remove, but otherwise it must look stock…
-no unprotected fuel systems… there must be sheet metal between the tank and occupants… stock location if fine unless it is outboard on the chassis w/ no protection.. ie: C/K series trucks… you could put a tank in the bed, but would need to sheetmetal the rear window… or you could build a cage around the tank to protect it…
-must be painted w/ a nascar inspired paint theme, remember, we want this to be fun…
-no destructive armor… basically you can build a front and rear bumper, but no add ons that could cause damage to another vehicle…
-optional build thread on MMORV… again, we want this to be fun… show off what you are building…
SxS CLASS
-doors are required… something positive must keep your feet in the vehicle…
-4 point harnesses
-grab handles for passenger
-functioning 4wd
-functioning winch
-full cage, OEM is okay
-fire extinguishers

The Busted Knuckle Films crew was on hand to film the first ever Mad Dash for Cash Race at Crusher Ridge Rock Crawler Park. Crusher Ridge is a 150 acre Off Road park in Faulkville, AL less than an hour north of Birmingham. Don’t let the size of the park fool you. There are plenty of challenging trails to keep you occupied for the weekend. Stay tuned to our website for a Review of the Park at a later date.
It only cost participants $15 for the weekend and that included your entry fee into the race. Entering a Free Race where there was Cash to be won was a no brainer for most of the participants. The Race course was about 200 yards long and “slick as snot on a door knob” (I think that is the correct country saying) from the 2 inches of rain that had been dumped on the course the day before. This made anything but a full throttle attempt at the final obstacle useless. The final obstacle was so nasty that only half of the competitors actually made it up. Brian Cole and his ColeWorx Highlighter Buggy took first place & $700 with the help of his Ramjet 502 and 42″ sticky iroks. Mason took second place and $300 in his black star buggy on 39 Krawlers. The Spider buggy actually shredded a 14bolt R&P.
The Race wasn’t the only action to be seen at the park. Just after the race a $800 bounty was put on the first rig up CROWALL. Diddy made a few valiant attempts in the yellow buggy only to end up on his lid. This resulted in two fires that were quickly put out with the help of some frosty beverages. You have got to love the willingness of spectators to get in there and sacrifice their adult beverages in order to help a wheeler in need.
The Coleworx crew and a few others kept the action going with some wide open attempts at Stairway. Stairway is basically a series of 4 foot tall ledges. Brain beat on his rig pretty good with no avail and eventually had to back down due to overheating issues. The Diesel buggy gave it a whirl and was denied just the same. Then the Riddler buggy shattered its hopes of making it up the unconquered wall of the day with a hard roll. His hopes weren’t the only thing shattered; his aftermarket hood took the brunt of the impact. I guess they can’t stay pretty forever! The buggy was heaved back onto all fours with the help of seemed like 30 people. Just when we thought it was impossible a silver buggy on propane finally found the right line. After a few full throttle attempts on the left side of stairway it found its way to the top to the tune of a cheering crowd echoing through the mountainside.
Crusher Ridge and the Mad Dash for Cash event will be featured in our newest full throttle offroad DVD “RockRods” due out later this year. For now sit back and enjoy some of the raw unedited footage we got over the weekend.
At Busted Knuckle Films we don’t just cover 4×4 Offroad events. If it gets your adrenaline flowing and has a likelihood of bodily injury you better believe we will be there to film and partake in the shenanigans. After all we are just a bunch of camera carrying adrenaline Junkies. The Clemson Freeride Downhill Race takes place just a few miles from the Clemson University campus in South Carolina. It is a Downhill Freeride course set up with various wooden and dirt obstacles. Racers are arranged into classes from youth to expert and judged by time. I myself even took some time away from behind the camera and raced the beginner class on my Specialized Pitch Mountainbike. Here is an account of the race from my own perspective. I almost forgot what competition was like. It is something that is in our DNA we all want to compete. We compete in everything growing up only to let it go by the wayside later in life. I thought all that pedaling wore me out when I was making my practice runs…..It was 10times worse when I got to the starting line. As the official began counting me down from 30seconds. My heart started the race way before I did. It pounded faster and faster the closer it got 5,4,3,2,1 GO!, I was off pedaling as hard as I could to the first obstacle. I cleared the double I had been having issues with during practice with no problem and was off to the next obstacle. I soared over the next jump with my heart pounding 90 miles an hour. As I leaned into the first high berm I could hear the crowd cheering PEDAL PEDAL PEDAL!!. I went into straight adrenaline mode ripping through the next berm almost getting parallel with the ground as I leaned in to it. I sailed over the next table top and did a little bar tweak for show, that only made the crowd louder. I railed the next turn and was off to the wall. I hit the wall with all my speed and no thought of tapping the brakes. I hit the transition and before I knew it I was on a perfect line in the center of the wall hugging the turn like a nascar. I tapped my brakes for the first time when I hit the hairpin turn as the crowd once again shouted to Pedal. I was gassed at this point with a small uphill section and tight technical section in front of me. I pedaled through it all and launched off the A-frame into the only major uphill of the course. The suspension of the bike sunk down as I hit the bottom of the hill and shot up the other side. I came around the next turn pedaling with everything I had. I bypassed the road gap jump to save time and not risk casing it. I leaned back on the seat and readied myself for the two rockgardens lurking at the bottom of the course. I ripped through them on the edge of being out of control and shot down the wooden stepdown. As I came around the last corner I could see the finish line with the people cheering and the Cowbell sending me into a high that only racing can give you. I steered across the bridge and through the finish line. I had made it through my 1st run of my 1st race EVER and I hadnt made a single mistake. My second run went much the same with me picking up a little speed in a few spots. I was on cloud nine and got more air on the table tops that I thought I ever could. As I meandered my way through the final rock garden I lost control and the bike came out from underneath me. It happened so fast I don’t even know what I did to make the bike loose its grip. As the dust began to clear I could hear the crowd cheering louder than I had heard them the entire race. They were telling me to FINISH. As I gathered myself and quickly threw myself back on the bike I noticed my right hand was completely numb. I was too pumped to feel any pain so I just gunned it down the remainder of the course and across the finish line. This is Gravity Racing at its best. The crowd cheering, the cowbell ringing, the feeling when the official says GO, and the feeling of accomplishment when you cross the finish line for the very first time. I finished 2nd only 1.2 seconds behind 1st place. I guess I should have pedaled harder. But that didn’t matter to me. I had found something I had lost along time ago. The feel of a real competition. Now that I remember that feeling I AM HOOKED. When is the next race!?! If you have an event like this that you would like us to cover feel free to contact us. BKF can Film, Photograph and make a professional DVD of your event. An event DVD is a great way to get more racers signing up for your next event. Busted Knuckle Films can also make a short highlight real that you can post on your website or to youtube. A highlight real can be a very effective tool for attracting sponsors to your next event.
