2011 SFWDA Dixie Run

We have been itching at the chance to make it out to one of the biggest off road events in Tennessee. Dixie Run is ran by the Southern Four Wheel Drive Association and has been held annually for over 25 years! We pulled in to Golden Mountain Park on Thursday afternoon. It is nestled in the Sparta, Tennessee hills. We were amazed at how well built this park is. It looks like it used to be a big amusement park. We drove up the gravel drive past the dirt circle track and up the hill to the main pavilion between the ponds to setup the Busted Knuckle Booth. We got everything unhooked and headed for a near bye hotel about 20minutes away.
We returned bright and early on Friday to walk around and meet the early risers wandering through vendor row. We caught up with Adam Woodlee of Wide Open Design and Nazir Adam who owns the infamous Blower Buggy. They were getting ready to head out for a trail ride. Nazir asked me how I was getting around. I pointed at my 400EX and laughed. He chuckled and yelled “nope your riding with me”. Without hesitation I hopped in the 830hp supercharged monster and we were off. The buggy has PCI Race Radios so you can talk and not be deafened by the throaty exhaust. We did some mild trails and I got out from time to time to catch some of the action. The new 42″ BFG Krawler stickies wrapped around 20″ beadlocks stuck to everything. He made the new “crackhead” obstacle look like it was nothing. The sun started to go down and the weather started to get cold. The cold weather was no match for the heated seats in the blower buggy. We got back to camp and I climbed out and headed back to the hotel.
Saturday morning is the main day at Dixie Run. There was a competition for all rigs. It was on a course right off the main drag. Competitors had to start the course facing down hill and back up and spin around before they could begin. They then went up a ledge at the bottom and had to make a loop at the top choosing to either go up a nasty climb for a bonus or go up the easy line and come down the nasty ledge. A Toyota Truck on 38″ tires started the show by showing all the big dogs that he could one shot the nasty ledge at the top of the hill. All of the competitors made the nasty ledge at the top. Some took more attempts than others but the action was great! The Rancho buggy had all kinds of bad luck after Running out of gas trying to get to the start line (they will never let him live that one down). He broke a driveline on the crazy ledge at the top after a few throttle happy attempts and had to be winched. Adam Lee put on a show in his new 4 wheel steer buggy and had the fastest time of the day.
Once the comp was over everyone headed to the top of the hill for some much needed lunch. They had some amazing BBQ courtesy of Blue Flame BBQ. Once our bellies were full it was time to get out on the trail and do some exploring. We made our way over to the infamous Bounty Hill. This obstacle is one of the toughest I have ever seen. Only a hand full of people have ever made it up successfully. The rollover rate is very high on this one. We pulled up as a crowd was descending on this adrenaline junky of an obstacle. Jake Burkey was the first to attempt. This is no place for a Jeep even one as heavily built as Jake’s. Everyone was surprised (even Jake) when he pulled up on the obstacle and decided to hammer down and see what happens. The epicness that ensued cannot be described in words but I will do my best. It is best to watch the video below. He launched the buggy half way up the climb only to lunge over to the left and start rolling. People scattered off of the large rock wall (usually a fairly safe place) as Jake and his co pilot tumbled down the hill only to land back on all fours. The crowd went crazy! Jake feeding off of the adrenaline strapped on a helmet and went for round two. His second attempt ended with the Jeep on its side. He was recovered and back down the hill for Adam Woodlee to give it a try in his KOH buggy. Adam is a Bounty Hill Veteran and has climbed it multiple times. After getting lined up just right he launched his LS powered buggy hard up the near vertical rock face. SNAP! Something let loose in the rear 14bolt axle. He was done for the day. PJ Mallory was up next in his FJ40 skinned buggy. He had already climbed the obstacle the day before and was ready to show off this time in front of a crowd. He wasn’t so lucky this time. After lining up with his rear steer he launched his buggy hard with his Maxxis tires scratching for a grip. He slides sideways and rolls over onto his side. Nazir Adam (the owner of the Blower Buggy) has been watching everything unfold from the drivers seat of his 830hp Rockwell endowed Blower Buggy. He sikes his self up and gets ready for battle. The Buggy is stripped of its skins and readied for battle. Nazir and his co driver throw on some helmets and pull up to feel out the rock wall that is Bounty Hill. He gives a few good launches and warms up the 42″ sticky Krawlers. Adam Woodlee guides him into position. In one fluid motion Nazir grips the wheel and stabs the throttle the krawlers are no match for the heart pounding horsepower. They lose grip at the top and throw the rig sideways into a roll. When the dust clears Nazir and his Co Driver are high fiving. They line up to give it another try. This time Nazir stabs the throttle and loses traction at the top of the rock face which this time throws them right into a roll. They once again land on all fours. Thats it. Four rigs came to try and tame the beast that is Bounty Hill and they all leave with an adrenaline infused memory and a few new scratches and dents. What a great end to and epic day. We all headed back to the pavilion where food was served, prizes raffled, and awards were given.
We had no idea what to expect coming to Dixie Run. What we got was a great laid back weekend with a ton of awesome people and some of the best action we have shot all year courtesy of Bounty Hill. Tim Cameron ‘s NEW Showtime Buggy

Timmie Cameron goes through buggies the way drag racers go through tires. He will build one and drive it for a while. If he doesn’t like the way the rig feels it will be for sale in a blink of an eye in favor of a new build. Timmie built the Hell Raiser buggy to be fitted with Rockwells. He hated the weight of the beefy axles. So he ripped out the drivetrain and sold the buggy after only one ride. He missed the light weight response of his Green Goblin buggy and decided to build another light weight rig with plenty of ponies under the engine cage.

Burnt out after building his own chassis for the Hell Raiser buggy, Tim decided to let Jimmy at Smith Motorsports build the chassis for his new project. Timmie took the chassis and built the suspension with double triangulated 4 links and coilovers at both ends. The drivetrain from Hell Raiser was crammed in between the frame rails of the new ride. A fire breathing LSX454 started off the list. This 7.4 liter crate engine from GM Performance is rated at 620 horsepower with 11:1 compression. The dirt pounding power of this engine is handled by a power-glide transmission with a 2,000 rpm stall. An Atlas t-case transfers the power to the front and rear 14 bolt steering axles. Single ended rams turn the massive TSL SX tires at each axle. Hummer H1 beadlocks keep the tires stuck on the rims while Timmie beats his way up obstacles and RCV axle shafts take the pounding and try their best to keep the tires smoking. Believe it or not this rig does not have kirkey seats in it! Seems like Tim is tired of being sore after a long weekend of rock bouncing. So he decided to fit some nice suspension seats and 4 point harnesses into his new creation. His new creation was powder-coated fire engine red and dubbed SHOWTIME! We were lucky enough to catch the rig in action at Choccolocco ORV in Jacksonville, AL during the Bama Buggy Bash event. Tim walked up Violater like it was nothing. He did however burn up the trans on WFO. He said he will get the powerglide built to handle the abuse and be back to kill some hills in no time. Timmie says he loves the new rig, so don’t expect to see a for sale thread any time soon. Keep checking back as we will be adding videos to this page. RBD 2010 – Mountain Mayhem Competition

What happens when you take one of the most well known exclusive Off-Road Parties and make it open to the public? EPIC is what happens. RBD a.k.a Ricky B. Day in honor of the young photographers birthday has been a well known invite only event for years. The past videos and photos from this once a year off-road thrill fest made hundreds of people flock to Morris Mountain ORV in Heflin, AL for a chance to get in on the Shenanigans. Here is how it all went down.

Friday

The day started off as a good crowd started to roll into the park and get ready for some great wheeling. The weather was cold, windy, and rainy. This didn’t stop the off-roaders from tearing down the trails and hitting every obstacle in the park. There were numerous rollovers and flops as engines were bounced off their rev limiters on the mud covered climbs. The football fans watched the Iron Bowl on the big screen. People were still rolling in after the sun went down. That’s when the Antics came to life. There were Barbie Jeeps getting towed behind RZRs. A hood with seats and handles welded to it was used for excitement as people went for the ride of their lives around the campground and down the bomber track.

Saturday

More and more people continued to poor into the already packed out campground to witness the most exciting off-road event of the year. That’s right the Mountain Mayhem Competition was scheduled for 10:30 and a crowd of cheering fans covered the hill sides around Los Primos and its infamous double ledge. The driver meeting was held as some of the sport’s top drivers prepared for launch. The course started at the entrance to the gully just at the very bottom of the trail and ended as you topped the double ledge. Each driver got 3 runs and the fastest time wins. Blue Torch Fabworks put up $1000 in prize money and Smith Motorsports threw in an extra $500 to sweeten the deal. You would have thought this race was for a million dollars! The battle for 1st place was between Bobby Tanner, Wes Kean, & Timmie Cameron. Bobby Tanner launched up the double ledge with one of the fastest times but was a little slower in the first section of the course. Wes Kean put on a show as he wheelied through the finish line. Tim Cameron sent his rig flying over 10 feet in the air with one swift punch of the skinny pedal. Wes had his rear tires studded with what looked to be lug nuts? This did not play a huge factor as he broke his transmission in half and cut a rear tire. Wes and the folks at Smith Motorsports didn’t let that slow them down. They swapped both rear tires and hoped the trans would hold on for one final run. It did and it was the fastest run of the day. Sending Wes Kean home King of the Mountain with $1500 Cash in his pocket paid in full at the finish line. For all other venues out there, this is how a REAL competition should be run. I only hope they take note. The $50 each person spent to get into the park for the event wasn’t even in question. I would have paid double that to watch the event again. Luckily for those of you that did not make it, the race will be featured in our new DVD “RockRods” to be released in Early 2011.

Once the comp was over, everyone scrambled back for a great lunch catered bye some great Tennessee folks. (I hope to see them and their hot wings at more events) Then it was an all out race to the trails. Everyone with a rig went out to enjoy the rest of the day with full throttle on their minds. The day was capped off later that night with some birthday cake and a few of our favorite beverages. There was also some more Hell Sledding & Pitbike shenanigans that went on into the night.

Sunday

Everyone awoke and started getting ready to make the long journey back to reality. A few of us stuck around for some last day shenanigans. The Barbie Jeep graveyard was picked of every good vehicle it had & even a few that were questionable. We took some time to modify said vehicles with a sledge hammer, pry bar, and chain saw. We then loaded up our chariots and carried the over to the Los Primos bypass trail for a Downhill Race of epic proportions. Racers faced off two at a time single eliminations style. When the dust cleared and the little pieces of plastic stopped flying through the air, the winner was Busted Knuckle Racing. I took home $18, some stickers, a burger king gift card and a memory of one of the funnest races I have ever been a part of.

WEROCK Dayton Photos and Video – May 2011

We look forward to the W.E. Rock events in Dayton, Tennessee all year long. The first of two events to be held in Dayton this year did not disappoint. Some 3,000 people flocked to this once man made strip mine turned rock crawling paradise. We got to the park about 6pm on Friday and the crowd had already started to roll in despite the unusually cold temperatures. The vendor row was full of great supporters of W.E.Rock including some mighty tasty food.

The action started around 7pm as these professional rock crawlers started on multiple courses. It was not very long before we had our first rollover. Rollovers happened all night as the course was much more technical due to the rains we had earlier in the day. Carnage was abundant. Wes Kean, the crowd favorite, blew a front ring and pinion early in the night and had to call for parts. Friday nights results made for an excited field of racers separated by minimal points.

Day two started off with a drizzling rain that made the courses slick yet again. The competitors now had to run the same courses as the night before but with a new twist. They have to run the courses in the opposite direction.  The crowd watched in amazement as drivers attempted drop offs over eight feet in height. Many teams chose to back down the huge drops. This is mainly due to the weight of the engine in the front of the vehicles. As soon as the rear tires would hit the bottom of the drop, the drivers would stomp on the gas to keep from rolling. Some did this with precision, others ended up on their lid. Wes Kean had another rough night. He rolled on a drop off killing his distributor cap. Time ran out as Wes and his spotter Woody tried to push the rig through the finish gate. It is no wonder why team WFO has such a huge following. After a torch, JB Weld, and some borrowed parts they finally got the rig started but it would not make it to the shotgun round.

After two rounds of fierce competition the teams were neck and neck going into the shotgun round. The Shotgun round consisted of two timed courses. One was a typical rock crawl course and the other was known as “Bonus Land” in which teams had the chance to take 25 points off of their final score. Competitors had to conquer a series of gates while stopping to check in each one at the bottom of the course. This made for some great action as drivers stomped the gas to complete the course within the allowed time. When the dust cleared Bill Barton was left standing in victory lane with a 1st place finish in the Unlimited Class, while Derek West came out on top in the Pro Mod class, and Brandon Hudson dominated the Trail Class.
