Master of Mayhem Competition Videos

Crawl Magazine has been putting out the best Off Road Magazine for years. The only problem is that they are based out of Washington State and rarely find their way to the Southeast. Ian from Extreme 4×4 changed all of this when he became one of three new owners of the magazine. With the help of Essentially Off Road in Murfreesboro, Tennesseee they put on the first ever CRAWL Southern Readers Ride. The ride took place at Mayhem Off Road Park in Mcminnville, Tennessee. We pulled into the park nestled back in the rolling hills around 9:00 am. Some of the baddest buggies the South has to offer were already lining up for the competition. These drivers had their game faces on with one thing on their mind. Becoming the Master of Mayhem and taking home the $1000 grand prize. Some 650 people had decided to join us for a smoldering hot day of hardcore wheeling.  Essentially Off Road aka EOR also had the brand new CRAWL Camaro Buggy there for its debut. This thing was a work of art and included a Turbo charged LS1 under the hood. The course was a tough one consisting of 75 yards of rocks and 2 nasty ledges that would take finesse and a ton of throttle to conquer. The competition was fierce. Parts were being pushed to the braking point and then some. Rollovers were common and so was the smell of smoking tires. After a nasty round of competition the John Deere Buggy driven by Richie Keith was on top. He actually rolled the buggy on the first ledge, but as soon as it landed back on all fours he was off again to make the fastest time of the round. Round two had its fair share of carnage as well. Tim Bacon was driving his son’s Purple Passion buggy and after some full throttle

attempts at the second ledge wound up on his lid. I guess Bubba shouldn’t have called and gave him a hard time about not driving it hard enough! Adam Woodlee

took the lead late in the race in his Ferrari skinned buggy. It came down to one racer Mark Statum in his Coleworx Eleanor Buggy. He let the LS3 scream as he shot his way up the course for the fastest time and took home the $1000 prize. Mark Statum is the 2011 Master of Mayhem. Check out some of the videos below. We had 3 cameras set up for this race and the footage will be included in our next Off Road DVD RockRods 2. The best thing about the entire event was that EOR and CRAWL helped raise thousands of dollars for the Medcamps of Lousiana, a FREE camp for children with disabilities. Way to go guys!

Top 4
1) Mark Statum- Coleworx Eleanor
2) Adam Woodlee – Red Ferrari Buggy
3) Richie Keith – John Deere Buggy
4) Randall Key- Blaze Buggy

TNT Motorsports 2011 King of the Hammers Video

Posted by: Matt | Comments (1)
Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Trent Blew and Corey Kruchkowski make up the TNT Motorsports race team. They decided to take a different approach when it came to race rig design. They built a tube chassis around a Jeep YJ and put TTB front suspension in it. Instead of just throwing a V8 in between the frame rails they built the inline six and added a healthy shot of nitrous. The nitrous would help them keep up when hauling the mail across the faster sections of Johnson Valley. They were one of only two vehicles to compete with a TTB style front suspension in the 2011 Griffin King of the Hammers Race in Johnson Valley California. Ragnar Robertsson came all the way from Iceland to pilot the rig and guarantee the crazy Canadians an international  spot in the race. Prerunning the rig went well. The team spent the 3 days leading up to the race wrenching on their YJ Buggy to make its date with destiny. Team TNT with Ragnar at the wheel and Corey at the Co-driver position pulled up to the line with their hearts pumping louder than the pistons of their built motor. They were counted down until the flag dropped. Ragnar stabbed the throttle and they were on their way. Their opponent beat them off the line but once the rig got up to speed the TTB suspension started to shine as they reeled in and passed numerous competitors. Just after the 1st checkpoint a boulder the size of a refrigerator took out the front steering. Ragnar and Corey spent 45 minutes replacing everything with spare parts and were back on the race course. They walked through Elvis which was the first major rock obstacle of the course. They pulled up to arguably the hardest trail of the course Outer Limits and had to swap propane tanks. This was at Mile Marker 28. They beat their way up the beginning of Outer Limits and the rig was doing great. The TTB suspension was allowing them to take some really tight lines through the obstacles. They pulled up to the first of two waterfalls and noticed that the steering was acting up. The fittings had finally crumpled. Corey decided to hoof it to the remote pit 2 miles away for parts while Ragnar stayed and worked on the buggy. Corey walked past a huge traffic jam at the 2nd waterfall where Dave Cole was perched up on a rock directing traffic and continued on to the remote pit. After a while he returned overheated and tired with parts and some JB weld. They made the needed repairs and assessed their situation. At 2:30 in the afternoon and only 29 miles into the race Team TNT decided to call it a day. They limped back to the pits with their heads held high. They had brought a new rig with an unproven suspension and a green team to the toughest one day off road race in the world. They had competed with the best of the best. Less than half of the teams that began this brutal race finished it. Team TNT will be back next year with a new rig ready to prove to the world that they have what it takes to Finish the 2012 King of the Hammers Race. Read more about their race rig buildup HERE.

WEROCK Dayton Photos and Video – May 2011

Posted by: Matt | Comments (0)
Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

We look forward to the W.E. Rock events in Dayton, Tennessee all year long. The first of two events to be held in Dayton this year did not disappoint. Some 3,000 people flocked to this once man made strip mine turned rock crawling paradise. We got to the park about 6pm on Friday and the crowd had already started to roll in despite the unusually cold temperatures. The vendor row was full of great supporters of W.E.Rock including some mighty tasty food.

The action started around 7pm as these professional rock crawlers started on multiple courses. It was not very long before we had our first rollover. Rollovers happened all night as the course was much more technical due to the rains we had earlier in the day. Carnage was abundant. Wes Kean, the crowd favorite, blew a front ring and pinion early in the night and had to call for parts. Friday nights results made for an excited field of racers separated by minimal points.

Day two started off with a drizzling rain that made the courses slick yet again. The competitors now had to run the same courses as the night before but with a new twist. They have to run the courses in the opposite direction.  The crowd watched in amazement as drivers attempted drop offs over eight feet in height. Many teams chose to back down the huge drops. This is mainly due to the weight of the engine in the front of the vehicles. As soon as the rear tires would hit the bottom of the drop, the drivers would stomp on the gas to keep from rolling. Some did this with precision, others ended up on their lid. Wes Kean had another rough night. He rolled on a drop off killing his distributor cap. Time ran out as Wes and his spotter Woody tried to push the rig through the finish gate. It is no wonder why team WFO has such a huge following. After a torch, JB Weld, and some borrowed parts they finally got the rig started but it would not make it to the shotgun round.

After two rounds of fierce competition the teams were neck and neck going into the shotgun round. The Shotgun round consisted of two timed courses. One was a typical rock crawl course and the other was known as “Bonus Land” in which teams had the chance to take 25 points off of their final score. Competitors had to conquer a series of gates while stopping to check in each one at the bottom of the course. This made for some great action as drivers stomped the gas to complete the course within the allowed time. When the dust cleared Bill Barton was left standing in victory lane with a 1st place finish in the Unlimited Class, while Derek West came out on top in the Pro Mod class, and Brandon Hudson dominated the Trail Class. Congratulations to all of the teams who came out and competed. Below are some of the video highlights of the event. We also have a full album of photos on the Busted Knuckle Facebook Page. The next W.E. Rock event in Dayton will be in August and Busted Knuckle Films will be there to catch all of the action once again. Come join us! For more information on this series check out WE Rock’s Website.

Barbie Jeep Racing in Auburn Alabama

Posted by: Matt | Comments (0)
Monday, May 2nd, 2011

The largest barbie jeep race in history went down this past weekend in Auburn, Alabama during the 1st annual ECORS race at the Great American Park. People came from all over with their plastic chariots. If you are not familiar with barbie jeep racing, it is a fast growing sport that is taking over the Southeast. Grown men and kids a like find old power wheels vehicles and modify them for downhill racing head to head. Racing these toys turned race vehicles is a huge rush. The best part is they can usually be had for very cheap or even FREE. People have already started to modify their race vehicles with longer wheelbases, pneumatic tires, better seats and much more. The competitors are top notch, some even come dressed in full costume. Here is the video from the Auburn Barbie Jeep race where we had over 20 Racers making it our biggest race to date. For more videos visit the Busted Knuckle Youtube Page.

The race course wasn’t as steep as we were used to so we decided to make it a little more interesting. We added “pushers” to the race. One pusher per racer, they would push you down the hill as fast as possible while dodging other racers and pushers . This made for some great action as most of the pushers were ran over  or tripped and tumbled down the course. Good Ole Redneck Fun! We started out racing 8 wide. The first half of the racers to cross the finish line progressed to the next round. After 8 races a 15 year old on a stock barbie jeep was crowned the new champion. The previous champion Matt Myrick was put out of the race in the 3rd round when he wrecked another racer near the finish line. He said “If I ain’t gunna win I might as well put on a show!” We look forward to the next barbie jeep race. Keep up to date with everything Barbie Jeep Racing by becoming a Fan of Barbie Jeep Racing on Facebook.

Barbie Jeep Racing – RBD 2010

Posted by: Matt | Comments (0)
Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Barbie Jeep Racing is one of the most dangerous off-road sports per dollar you can possibly get into. It is also the most FUN. How else can you get this much fun out of 15lbs of plastic! The concept is simple. Take a power-wheels vehicle, break off the drive gear, go to a steep hill, climb aboard and watch the madness unfold. Barbie Jeep Racing is one of our favorite off-road past times. These things can be had for FREE on the side of the road. Believe it or not, People actually throw them out not realizing their full potential. The 2010 RBD event that took place at Morris Mountain ORV in Heflin, Alabama is where we got our first taste of Barbie Jeep Racing. We took home 1st place and are now hooked! Be watching for us to have more downhill barbie jeep races at the off-road events we film in 2011. For now here is how things went down.

Round 1.

rbd2010095 Eight Racers dragged their trusty steeds to the top of the Los Primos trail bypass and prepared for battle. First off was the huge Hurricane against Lee Wolfe. After a few crashes the Hurricane made its way across the line first. Next up was Ricky B. in the Pirate 4×4 dune buggy vs. the Red Rocket. They crashed right out of the gate. The collision ended Ricky’s day and sent Red Rocket on to the next round. Next up was Yours Truly in the smallest Jeep of the race against the purple Jeep. I got off torbd2010099 a slow start but smoked by my competitor as he tumbled down the left side of the course. Last race of Round 1 was Will Carrell vs. the Shuntwerks Jeep. Will had a hellacious wreck at the bottom of the course but still managed to cross the finish line with only 3 wheels left on the jeep. The Shuntwerks Jeep took two hard crashes before it finally made it across the finish.

Round 2

After Round 1 we had 4 racers still in the running. The first race was the Hurricane vs. Red Rocket. The huge Hurricane launched the got off to a blazing start thanks to its size and heavy rider. This extra weight backfired on the rider as he missed the turn and was catapulted into the woods just above the finish line. The Red Rocket recovered from an early rollover at the top of the course and decided that laying on the jeep was a better approach. His fast thinking let the red rocket just barely beat the hurricane by inches.  The second race was Matt Myrick (Me) vs. Will Carrell who had borrowed a rig since his was laying at the bottom of the track in pieces. I got off to a rocky start as I rode the left embankment of the course. To my surprise I rode it out on 3 wheels and took the lead. I was able to pilot my plastic machine down the course unharmed as Will wrecked behind me on his rental rig.

Finals – Round 3

This was it the FINAL ROUND was here. The two smallest little red Jeeps of the bunch were the two left standing. Myself and the Red Rocket Jeep sat at the top of the hill with our hearts pumping and thoughts of greatness running through our ringing heads. John G. counted us down to the start of the race. With every number my heart pounded harder. Three, two, one, GO! For a moment all you could hear was the screams of the bystanders and the rolling of the plastic wheels as we battled it out to the last second. I managed to make the dreaded left hand turn at the half way point of the track as my competitor lost control and tumbled his way to a stop. I ran through the yellow caution tape that guarded the finish line at breakneck speeds. There I was, a Rookie to this great unknown sport. A sport where an average Joe can show up on any given Sunday with a kids toy and a set of ca-hones, Only to leave with a couple bruises and a memory that he will remember for a life time. Bruises are temporary, First Place is forever.

I accepted my prizes which came out to $12, some RBD stickers, a Burger King Gift Card, and a 15% coupon to Blue Torch Fabworks. It doesn’t seem like much but If I had it to do all over again I would have raced for a penny. This was a great way to end a great weekend of wheeling & celebrating Ricky’s 21st birthday. We dusted ourselves off and We loaded what was left of our fisher price chariots into the bed of the truck and made our way back to camp. If you want to take on this epic challenge, then we will see you next year at Morris Mountain ORV for RBD 2011. Until then enjoy some of the footage. Don’t forget to check out all of our Youtube videos & Subscribe as well as follow us on the Busted Knuckle Facebook page.

Harlan King Of the Hammers Qualifier DVD

Posted by: Matt | Comments (0)
Monday, August 9th, 2010

Busted Knuckle Films will be on hand filming the official DVD for the King of the Hammers Qualifier taking place in the Black Mountains of Kentucky. The Race will happen Saturday August the 14th. The top 3 finishers will  earn a starting position in the Griffin King Of the Hammers race, set for February 2011 in Johnson Valley, California. The DVD will be just $19.99 and can be ordered from our online store. It will be shot in full (HD) High Definition and should be close to an hour in length.
This race is unlike any other. The rigs are unlike any others. Not only are these vehicles built to crawl some of the nastiest obstacles the East has to offer; they are also built to go 80 miles per hour through the desert. This is off road endurance racing at its best. The competitors will have to navigate their way through over 40 miles of the most grueling terrain around. This race will definitely prepare the top 3 qualifiers for the World Series of Off-Road Racing known as King of the Hammers in 2011. The dream of racing in this big of a race draws competitors from all over the country. One racer from Florida has already been to multiple KOH qualifiers and has stated that he will be at the last chance qualifier on the lake bed in California if he doesn’t qualify before that. That is determination right there. That speaks volumes about our ever growing sport and the people that love it.

“I don’t know if the west coasters will give this place its due, but I believe this is going to be the hardest race of the season. I’d put it up on par with KOH if they were going to do the same distances. The rock crawling sections aren’t nearly as long, but the obstacles themselves are equal in difficulty.”

The location of the qualifier is just outside of Harlan, Kentucky at The Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area. Since opening in 2005, Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area has became a top off-road destination in the United States. Over 200 miles of trails on more than 7,000 acres accommodates ATV, 4×4 and dirtbike enthusiasts alike. Trails are rated by difficulty and signed for easy navigation.

BKF Featured Rig- Bomber Taurus

Posted by: Matt | Comments (0)
Friday, August 6th, 2010

Have you ever wanted to drive a race car but just didn’t think you had the cash? Well the Bomber Race during the Rock Rallye at Morris Mountain ORV might just be the answer. The race consists of junk cars racing around a specially built track for 4 hours all the while slamming into each other.

We decided to sponsor and help Crazy Steve of Integrity Automotive build a race car. The rules are simple; you take a car, rip out all of the glass, cage it, paint it & go race! The entrants for the 2010 race include everything from a F250 conversion van to a Honda Civic hatchback.

After a lot of searching we decided on a 1994 Ford Taurus. Actually it found us as its owner was giving it away for FREE. We got to work quickly cutting the roof off (this made it easier to build the cage) & gutting the car. The car needed some TLC including a new head gasket and some other miscellaneous wrenching. It didn’t take long for us to get it running enough to take it out to the dirt lot next door for some testing. The car was overheating badly, hey we can always just run the heater on full blast during the race right?

Next was the paint scheme. The rules state that we have to have a Nascar inspired paint scheme. We went to work with some Ford Blue and some cheap black spray paint. After rattle-canning the car half to death we slapped on a few stickers to make it look racey. We hand painted the Busted Knuckle Films logo on to the hood with some white enamel.

Then came the mandatory Roll-cage.  A few pieces of 1-3/4″ .120 wall HREW tubing was bent up  with a ProTools bender. We started with the main hoop just behind the driver otherwise known as the B-pillar. We welded it to the floor with some square plates. Then we connected two supports from it back to the trunk area. A few bars going down beside the driver and passengers feet and we had a regulation 6 point cage. We had a nice surprise as the car caught on fire while welding the plates to the floor. Turns out the gas line was running just below it. No worries though we quickly dowsed it out with a fire extinguisher. We also cut out the passenger airbag and added a grab bar for the person that is brave enough to ride with Steve.

Custom bumpers were fabbed up to keep the car protected during the 4hour smash em up derby endurance race. We hope the car can stay together for the entire race. It will be tough with Steveo behind the wheel. He already broke both front CV shafts test driving the Bomber Taurus in the field next to the shop. We will see what happens when he hits the 50′ table top. Catch all the action in our next DVD entitled “RockRods”. If you want to race check out the links in this post and get started!
