RBD 2010 – Mountain Mayhem Competition

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

What happens when you take one of the most well known exclusive Off-Road Parties and make it open to the public? EPIC is what happens. RBD a.k.a Ricky B. Day in honor of the young photographers birthday has been a well known invite only event for years. The past videos and photos from this once a year off-road thrill fest made hundreds of people flock to Morris Mountain ORV in Heflin, AL for a chance to get in on the Shenanigans. Here is how it all went down.

Friday

The day started off as a good crowd started to roll into the park and get ready for some great wheeling. The weather was cold, windy, and rainy. This didn’t stop the off-roaders from tearing down the trails and hitting every obstacle in the park. There were numerous rollovers and flops as engines were bounced off their rev limiters on the mud covered climbs. The football fans watched the Iron Bowl on the big screen. People were still rolling in after the sun went down. That’s when the Antics came to life. There were Barbie Jeeps getting towed behind RZRs. A hood with seats and handles welded to it was used for excitement as people went for the ride of their lives around the campground and down the bomber track.

Saturday

More and more people continued to poor into the already packed out campground to witness the most exciting off-road event of the year. That’s right the Mountain Mayhem Competition was scheduled for 10:30 and a crowd of cheering fans covered the hill sides around Los Primos and its infamous double ledge. The driver meeting was held as some of the sport’s top drivers prepared for launch. The course started at the entrance to the gully just at the very bottom of the trail and ended as you topped the double ledge. Each driver got 3 runs and the fastest time wins. Blue Torch Fabworks put up $1000 in prize money and Smith Motorsports threw in an extra $500 to sweeten the deal. You would have thought this race was for a million dollars! The battle for 1st place was between Bobby Tanner, Wes Kean, & Timmie Cameron. Bobby Tanner launched up the double ledge with one of the fastest times but was a little slower in the first section of the course. Wes Kean put on a show as he wheelied through the finish line. Tim Cameron sent his rig flying over 10 feet in the air with one swift punch of the skinny pedal. Wes had his rear tires studded with what looked to be lug nuts? This did not play a huge factor as he broke his transmission in half and cut a rear tire. Wes and the folks at Smith Motorsports didn’t let that slow them down. They swapped both rear tires and hoped the trans would hold on for one final run. It did and it was the fastest run of the day. Sending Wes Kean home King of the Mountain with $1500 Cash in his pocket paid in full at the finish line. For all other venues out there, this is how a REAL competition should be run. I only hope they take note. The $50 each person spent to get into the park for the event wasn’t even in question. I would have paid double that to watch the event again. Luckily for those of you that did not make it, the race will be featured in our new DVD “RockRods” to be released in Early 2011.

Once the comp was over, everyone scrambled back for a great lunch catered bye some great Tennessee folks. (I hope to see them and their hot wings at more events) Then it was an all out race to the trails. Everyone with a rig went out to enjoy the rest of the day with full throttle on their minds. The day was capped off later that night with some birthday cake and a few of our favorite beverages. There was also some more Hell Sledding & Pitbike shenanigans that went on into the night.

Sunday

Everyone awoke and started getting ready to make the long journey back to reality. A few of us stuck around for some last day shenanigans. The Barbie Jeep graveyard was picked of every good vehicle it had & even a few that were questionable. We took some time to modify said vehicles with a sledge hammer, pry bar, and chain saw. We then loaded up our chariots and carried the over to the Los Primos bypass trail for a Downhill Race of epic proportions. Racers faced off two at a time single eliminations style. When the dust cleared and the little pieces of plastic stopped flying through the air, the winner was Busted Knuckle Racing. I took home $18, some stickers, a burger king gift card and a memory of one of the funnest races I have ever been a part of.

Check out all of the pictures and Videos and we will see you guys next year for RBD 2011. I will be there to defend my Barbie Jeepin Title.

Barbie Jeep Racing – RBD 2010

Posted by: Matt | Comments (0)
Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Barbie Jeep Racing is one of the most dangerous off-road sports per dollar you can possibly get into. It is also the most FUN. How else can you get this much fun out of 15lbs of plastic! The concept is simple. Take a power-wheels vehicle, break off the drive gear, go to a steep hill, climb aboard and watch the madness unfold. Barbie Jeep Racing is one of our favorite off-road past times. These things can be had for FREE on the side of the road. Believe it or not, People actually throw them out not realizing their full potential. The 2010 RBD event that took place at Morris Mountain ORV in Heflin, Alabama is where we got our first taste of Barbie Jeep Racing. We took home 1st place and are now hooked! Be watching for us to have more downhill barbie jeep races at the off-road events we film in 2011. For now here is how things went down.

Round 1.

rbd2010095 Eight Racers dragged their trusty steeds to the top of the Los Primos trail bypass and prepared for battle. First off was the huge Hurricane against Lee Wolfe. After a few crashes the Hurricane made its way across the line first. Next up was Ricky B. in the Pirate 4×4 dune buggy vs. the Red Rocket. They crashed right out of the gate. The collision ended Ricky’s day and sent Red Rocket on to the next round. Next up was Yours Truly in the smallest Jeep of the race against the purple Jeep. I got off torbd2010099 a slow start but smoked by my competitor as he tumbled down the left side of the course. Last race of Round 1 was Will Carrell vs. the Shuntwerks Jeep. Will had a hellacious wreck at the bottom of the course but still managed to cross the finish line with only 3 wheels left on the jeep. The Shuntwerks Jeep took two hard crashes before it finally made it across the finish.

Round 2

After Round 1 we had 4 racers still in the running. The first race was the Hurricane vs. Red Rocket. The huge Hurricane launched the got off to a blazing start thanks to its size and heavy rider. This extra weight backfired on the rider as he missed the turn and was catapulted into the woods just above the finish line. The Red Rocket recovered from an early rollover at the top of the course and decided that laying on the jeep was a better approach. His fast thinking let the red rocket just barely beat the hurricane by inches.  The second race was Matt Myrick (Me) vs. Will Carrell who had borrowed a rig since his was laying at the bottom of the track in pieces. I got off to a rocky start as I rode the left embankment of the course. To my surprise I rode it out on 3 wheels and took the lead. I was able to pilot my plastic machine down the course unharmed as Will wrecked behind me on his rental rig.

Finals – Round 3

This was it the FINAL ROUND was here. The two smallest little red Jeeps of the bunch were the two left standing. Myself and the Red Rocket Jeep sat at the top of the hill with our hearts pumping and thoughts of greatness running through our ringing heads. John G. counted us down to the start of the race. With every number my heart pounded harder. Three, two, one, GO! For a moment all you could hear was the screams of the bystanders and the rolling of the plastic wheels as we battled it out to the last second. I managed to make the dreaded left hand turn at the half way point of the track as my competitor lost control and tumbled his way to a stop. I ran through the yellow caution tape that guarded the finish line at breakneck speeds. There I was, a Rookie to this great unknown sport. A sport where an average Joe can show up on any given Sunday with a kids toy and a set of ca-hones, Only to leave with a couple bruises and a memory that he will remember for a life time. Bruises are temporary, First Place is forever.

I accepted my prizes which came out to $12, some RBD stickers, a Burger King Gift Card, and a 15% coupon to Blue Torch Fabworks. It doesn’t seem like much but If I had it to do all over again I would have raced for a penny. This was a great way to end a great weekend of wheeling & celebrating Ricky’s 21st birthday. We dusted ourselves off and We loaded what was left of our fisher price chariots into the bed of the truck and made our way back to camp. If you want to take on this epic challenge, then we will see you next year at Morris Mountain ORV for RBD 2011. Until then enjoy some of the footage. BKF Featured Rig- Bomber Taurus

Posted by: Matt | Comments (0)
Friday, August 6th, 2010

Have you ever wanted to drive a race car but just didn’t think you had the cash? Well the Bomber Race during the Rock Rallye at Morris Mountain ORV might just be the answer. The race consists of junk cars racing around a specially built track for 4 hours all the while slamming into each other.

We decided to sponsor and help Crazy Steve of Integrity Automotive build a race car. The rules are simple; you take a car, rip out all of the glass, cage it, paint it & go race! The entrants for the 2010 race include everything from a F250 conversion van to a Honda Civic hatchback.

After a lot of searching we decided on a 1994 Ford Taurus. Actually it found us as its owner was giving it away for FREE. We got to work quickly cutting the roof off (this made it easier to build the cage) & gutting the car. The car needed some TLC including a new head gasket and some other miscellaneous wrenching. It didn’t take long for us to get it running enough to take it out to the dirt lot next door for some testing. The car was overheating badly, hey we can always just run the heater on full blast during the race right?

Next was the paint scheme. The rules state that we have to have a Nascar inspired paint scheme. We went to work with some Ford Blue and some cheap black spray paint. After rattle-canning the car half to death we slapped on a few stickers to make it look racey. We hand painted the Busted Knuckle Films logo on to the hood with some white enamel.

Then came the mandatory Roll-cage.  A few pieces of 1-3/4″ .120 wall HREW tubing was bent up  with a ProTools bender. We started with the main hoop just behind the driver otherwise known as the B-pillar. We welded it to the floor with some square plates. Then we connected two supports from it back to the trunk area. A few bars going down beside the driver and passengers feet and we had a regulation 6 point cage. We had a nice surprise as the car caught on fire while welding the plates to the floor. Turns out the gas line was running just below it. No worries though we quickly dowsed it out with a fire extinguisher. We also cut out the passenger airbag and added a grab bar for the person that is brave enough to ride with Steve.

Custom bumpers were fabbed up to keep the car protected during the 4hour smash em up derby endurance race. We hope the car can stay together for the entire race. It will be tough with Steveo behind the wheel. He already broke both front CV shafts test driving the Bomber Taurus in the field next to the shop. We will see what happens when he hits the 50′ table top. Catch all the action in our next DVD entitled “RockRods”. If you want to race check out the links in this post and get started!

Alpha Psi Rodeo – Auburn, Alabama

Posted by: Matt | Comments (8)
Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

What a Rush! Thats all I can say about getting on a 2000 pound animal that hates your guts and trying to hang on for 8 seconds. There is a Rodeo that Alpha Psi Fraternity puts on every year in Auburn, AL. This isn’t your typical Rodeo, it is basically just a bunch of amateurs taking on rodeo events while a huge crowd kicks back on gooseneck trailers while enjoying a few of their favorite frosty beverages.

Riding a bull has always been on my “bucket list” you know, the things you want to do before you die. After watching the rodeo the previous year I knew I had to give it a shot. So I called up a friend of mine that rode in high school and got some pointers and some equipment. I figured that since I have been riding horses all my life that this should be easy. Oh was I wrong. After getting the mechanics of it all down and watching a few youtube videos, I was ready take on the challenge.

I barely slept the night before the rodeo. I woke up anxious and ready to go at 7am the day of the rodeo. I put on my gear, climbed in the Tacoma and headed down the road. We pulled through the rusty red gates that led us back to an old gooseneck trailer lined arena half full of college students.

We walked up to the arena as the owners started calling names. Of course my name was first on the list. “Matt Myrick” shouted the rough cut old man. I raised my already shaking hand “Yep that’s me” I yelled laughingly. The man asked me “Is this your first ride son?” I replied “Yep” With a big grin the old man yelled “Alright You will be on Sport”. Sport? I was thinking alright that doesn’t sound to bad. I walked up to the chute after some stretching and a few last minute pointers from my Coach Matt Cain. Wow it was a mean looking bull. Sport? maybe the name Killer or Cyclone would have been more fitting. Against my better judgment I climbed down on the Bull and got into position. Meanwhile my friends are all over on the side of the fence watching. The rodeo clown comes over to them and tells them “This is a pretty bad bull so If I come running towards the fence yall just get outa my way”. I’m sure glad I didn’t hear this until later. Bye this time the bull had already tried to pin my legs against both sides of the chute and buck me off a few times. My heart was pounding ninety to nothing. My coach was in my ear the whole time encouraging me to just nod my head when I was ready. After what seemed like days I finally raised my hand and nodded my head. The gate flung open and off I was. Holding on for dear life, high on adrenaline but still trying to remember the mechanics. After about 4 seconds Sport took a nice sideways jump throwing me off his left side. I hit the ground running with the bull right on my tail. The rodeo clown caught his attention just before the bull had a chance to throw me over the fence. I climbed up the fence and gave a good holler to the crowd. The adrenaline was still flowing. For all of you who think Skydiving is a huge rush, I think bull riding trumps it by far. A Texan said it best when he told me, “there ain’t a drug made that’s a bigger rush than strapping your hand onto the back of a pissed off bull.” I had just taken part in one of the most dangerous sports known to man. Best of all, we got it all on film. Look for us this year at the 2010 Alpha Psi Rodeo and check back for videos from the event.

The Busted Knuckle Films difference

Posted by: Matt | Comments (1)
Thursday, March 4th, 2010

At Busted Knuckle Films we like to do things a little different. We ask for feedback on what you like/dislike about the typical offroad DVD. We have done our research and are going against the grain. Our first offroad DVD “Southern Shenanigans” has over two years of footage packed into it. Just to give you a better idea of what we are working with.

First off, in our films you won’t hear a bunch of overpowering music. We love to hear a good built V8 scream and we know a lot of you do to. So we let the background music stay in the background so you can hear these healthy V8s come to life. We have good paced footage of some wild rigs making it up some heart-pounding obstacles, so you wont see us speeding up and muting the footage to try and compensate. You will also see a rig for more than a few seconds at a time. You will not however see a rig attempt an obstacle 10 times before it makes it either.

Like most of our viewers, we don’t have an unlimited rig budget so the vehicles in our films are mostly backyard budget built rigs. I know a eighty thousand dollar buggy can make it up that, the question is can a slightly modified F150 make it? If not, it sure will be fun to watch him try. We will bring you more “Run What ya Brung” type competitions so you can see how these budget built rigs do when bragging rights and a little cash are on the line.

Finally, BKF will bring you some of the most hilarious offroad/motorsports related Shenanigans you can dream of. You might want to tell your kids to make sure they do not try this at home before they watch it.

In the end it is the attention to what the viewer wants to see that sets Busted Knuckle Films apart from the rest. You will hear the chilling sound of motors bouncing off the rev limiter, you will see more budget built rigs that you could build in your own driveway, and you wont believe your eyes when you witness the Shenanigans that will keep you watching again and again.

We are always looking for feedback. Let us know what you think. CONTACT US.
