Thrills in the Hills – Choccolocco ORV

Choccolocco Mountain Off Road Vehicle Park is located in Jacksonville, Alabama, just one mile from the town square. We recently had the chance to make it out to this park for the Thrills in the Hills Event. This place is just plain ridiculous. We took the sport quads so we could get around easy and film. We had a hard time following the big buggies around due to the loose steep climbs. After a few hours of riding around we had gotten the park figured out so we could easily drive around and see all the best obstacles. There was even an f-250 superduty that was basically stock roaming around on the main roads.

We started off the day bye hitting Hells Revenge which is a dry creek bed that runs down one side of the property. It had a lot of steep loose climbs that went up the far side of the creek bed. There was also a nasty stacked ledge at the end that gave the rigs a good fight. No worries though, the ones that couldn’t make it up just took the bypass. We found that most of the more difficult trails had a bypass so everyone could see the main obstacle without having to back down or turn around.

Our favorite and the most well known trail of Choccolocco Mountain ORV is “BOAT RAMP”. This obstacle gets its name because it is a rock slab that has water running across it year round. If you have ever tried to walk up a boat ramp at the lake then you will quickly see how it got its name. Kyle even tried it on his Suzuki Z400 and quickly got bucked off the back. A guy in a honda powered buggy on stickies made Boat Ramp look like a driveway but a few of the other rigs had to make multiple full throttle attempts to conquer this beast. Two of the rigs slid back down and punctured a tire on the sharp edges of the step down into the obstacle and had to make repairs. We had a good scare when lightning struck just 30 feet from where we were filming. The owners claim that most people come into the park and immediately want to go try “Boat ramp”. He tries to convince them to try a few more trails first, but sure enough they come limping back 30 minutes later with a half broken rig.

All in all the trip was great. It was almost unbearably hot, but atleast there were creek beds and water everywhere you turned to cool off a bit in between obstacles. Bottom line is you have got to put this place on your list of off road parks to check out in Alabama. Check back for a detailed review of the park. For now enjoy some of the trip videos.

I remember when Alabama only had one official offroad park. Nowadays it seems like you can’t throw a dart at the state map without hitting one. Crusher Ridge Rockcrawler Park is one of the newest of these off road parks and it is nestled in the hills of Hartselle, Alabama. The park sits on 150 acres of rock ledges. Don’t Let its small size fool you; You can spend all weekend wheeling the more than 50 trails this park has to offer and they still have room to grow.

cr15The park is easily found if you take the Faulkville/Eva exit on I-65 and head east. Take your first left on Mt Zion Road and then take another left on Akins Mountain Road and it will dead end into the park. There are no RV hookups or Bathhouses at present but plans are in the works to make them available in the near future. If you are more of the hotel type, there are some nice ones just 5 miles down the road from the park.

The park allows Rockcrawlers, Atvs, and Side by Sides to come out and enjoy the fun. As far as wheeling goes, this park has something for everyone. It has plenty of nice rock ledges with multiple lines for even the most hardcore of vehicles. The majority of the trails are rated 4 or 5 on a 5 point scale. We found that most of the obstacles were easily accessed by roads that stock jeeps could make it down. Most of the trails are in the shade which makes wheeling during the hottest summer months alot less grueling.

Some of the craziest trails are Cro Wall and Stairway. Crowall is a “bounty hill” which means the first person up it wins some cash and a years free pass to the park. A few people have tried this nasty vertical climb but none have made it. Check below for a video of an orange buggy flipping down crowall.

Another great obstacle at the park is Stairway which is a series of 4 to 5 foot ledges going up the side of a hill. We witnessed quite a few rigs getting denied by this trail while filming the Crusher Ridge Mad Dash for Cash Race.

For all the latest offroad park and event information, check out the “Off Road Park” Section of our Forum. For now check out the videos and pictures below to get a better idea of what this great park has to offer. Plan a trip to Crusher Ridge Rockcrawler Park; You won’t regret it. We gave it a rating of 4 out of 5 because it is a smaller park that has plenty of room to grow. We can’t wait to see what trails Brad and the guys will dream up next.

The Great American Off Road Park – Auburn, AL

Posted by: Matt | Comments (5)
Monday, April 12th, 2010

Here in Auburn, AL we have been waiting a long time to have somewhere to wheel close to home. Are you tired of driving 2-4 hours to get to an offroad park? Well wait no longer because The Great American Park is here. The Park offers something for everyone. Bring your rockcrawler and come hit all the man made obstacles or bring your mud truck and let the mud fly in the mud riding area. They even allow side by sides and ATVs.

The Park is set on over 160 acres of rolling Auburn Hills. The owner has been working closely with our local off Road club AU Crawlers and has built some amazing obstacles. He calls his creation the “PowerCrawl 2010″. This area includes the Mariana Trench, the Balrog, and the Achilles Hill. He is working hard to give us rockcrawlers everything we are looking for in a totally man made off road park.

The Great American Park has just the thing for all of you mud slingers out there too. The “Field of Dreams” Mud Riding area includes the Hogwallow, the Boomerang, the Big Amazon, and the Montezuma. A mud riding area specifically created for stock trucks with tire size 35″ and under hasĀ  recently been added also. So whether you are romping through the mud in your stock Z71 or letting it eat in a fully built truck on 44s you will find an obstacle for you in this mud riding haven. The best part is if you get stuck someone is on hand to come pull you out at no extra charge.

Got a Dirt bike, ATV, or Side by Side? No problem, there are over 25 different ATV trails strewn across the park. You can splash through the mud and the muck on a 4×4 quad or rip up and down the trails on your dirt bike or sport quad. When you need a break you can kick back and watch all the action going on in the mud and rockcrawling areas.

The location of the park is perfect. It is only 5 minutes away from I-85 and 6 minutes away from the closest part store. At only 10-15 bucks for the day. I know where my next wheeling trip will be. The Great American Offroad Park. The park is open one Saturday a month right now, but plans have been made to make a camping area and soon they will be open for full weekends twice a month. For more information check out the Great American Park’s website or follow them on Facebook.

Check back for more pictures and video featuring this new and amazing park in Auburn, AL the home of Busted Knuckle Films. The park will also be featured in our next film as part of the Southern Shenanigans Series of off road dvds.

BKF wheels Hawks Pride Mountain Off Road Park

Posted by: Matt | Comments (1)
Thursday, March 4th, 2010

The Busted Knuckle Films Crew headed out to one of the newer offroad parks in Alabama. Hawks Pride Mountain Off Road Park located in Tuscumbia, AL has 1000 stunning acres with more than 30 trails to choose from. They have something for everyone. They even allow ATVs. It was freezing cold and snowing (good thing I have a heater in the Tacoma) but we braved the cold and put our rigs to the test on some of the toughest trails the park had to offer. The trails were all marked clearly and rated 1-5. The park was nice and slick from previous rain making trails usually rated a 3-4 almost impossible without some full throttle assaults. I think everyone in our group broke something. Good thing we caught it all on tape for your viewing pleasure. The park had a nice large open parking and camping area with restrooms. The fees for the park are $15 per driver and $10 per passenger which is well worth it for a great day of wheeling. Even though the park was super slick from rain, we cant wait to go back. If you live in or around North Alabama you have got to check this park out. If you see the BKF crew running around, make sure you do something crazy for the camera & you might even end up on our next Offroad DVD.
